Your Unhealthy Habits Are Killing Our Children!

I’m about to go on a rant!

There’s been something that has really gotten to me lately…

It’s the growing number of overweight and obese children, and it’s getting way out of control.

The statistics are now showing that 30% of children are overweight and obese. This is sick!

The crazy thing is that I’m sure there is a large majority of children that are on the borderline of falling into this category.

My family and I were at a camp ground last weekend and I am not exagerating when I say that 90% of the children there were overweight. It was really sad and very upsetting to see so many unhealthy kids and to think of what kind of future they are going to have.

Think of how aweful they must feel. How much they must get teased and the low self esteme from knowing how overweight they are.

Something MUST be done NOW!

It doesn’t have to be this way and you can do something about it.

I’ve got to say that I’m very happy that ABC and Shaquille O’Neil have stepped up to the plate with their new program “Shaq’s Big Challenge”.

It airs on Tuesday nights and this is a huge wake up call for many adults out there to see what these kids have gone through.

As an adult, you’ve got to realize that you are a role model for kids. You are leading by example.

What kind of example are you leading?

And if you are a parent… You are the #1 role model in your children’s lives.

If you are eating crap, sitting on your butt in front of the television, living a sedentary and out of control lifestyle… Your kids will pick up on this and adopt your bad habits.

Now it’s one thing for you to abuse your body and shorten your lifespan… but don’t do this to your children!

I am amazed that it is not enough motivation for someone to get their butt in shape when they know that they will die younger than they should, risk heart failure, type II diabetes, and many other diseases.

For some people the motivation to live the healthy lifestyle can come from wanting to have more energy to play with their kids or to live long enough to see their grandchildren and be able to play with them too.

This is a pretty good motivator.

But what if I told you that if you don’t straighten up your act and begin to lead by example by eating healthy nutrient rich foods, exercising daily, and reducing the stress in your life… you may wind up burying your children before you suffer from your heart attack or develop type II diabetes.

Is this harsh and blunt… Hell Ya!

It’s the grim reality that we are facing and someone has to say it.

Today’s children may not live to be 70 or even 60 and that’s a scary thought.

If this isn’t enough for you to give your head a big shake and get your butt in gear by improving your health and living the Unstoppable Lifestyle and lead by example… I don’t know what is?

I don’t care how hectic life is, how many extra ciricular things you’ve got going on, how late you have to work, how tired you are…

It’s no excuse to be going thru the fast food drive thru’s several times a week, shoving processed packaged foods in your childrens lunches, and allowing them to drink gallons of pop a day.

Not to mention shoving them in front of the television or computer so you don’t have to get involved and be active with them.

Preparing healthy meals does not take as much time as you think and you can make enough for many left over meals.

Your life is probably crazy because you are trying to support your family and do what you think is best for them. The problem is you are sacraficing your health and your children’s health…

This is a huge consequence!

Now I’m not asking you to go on some crash diet to get yourself in shape and be an example…

That’s an aweful example to lead by.

All I’m asking is that you make daily improvements to your nutrition, activity level, and overall wellness.

Be better today then you were yesterday, and be better tomorrow than you are today.

You don’t have to change overnight. I don’t care if it takes you 2 years as long as you get there and continue to improve for the rest of your life.

This is the “Unstoppable Lifestyle”

It should seem torturous.

Enjoy the journey and have purpose behind what you are doing.

I don’t want you to fall victim to the quick fix fad programs out there.

I want you to develop the ‘Unstoppable Mindset’.

If you can’t find the motivation yourself… at least do it for the young kids out there. They shouldn’t have to suffer because of our laziness.

In all of my experimentation and research on the subject of nutrition for fast fat burning, health and fitness over the last 10+ years, I’ve discovered 2 magical substances that can have a dramatic effect on whether or not you burn body fat and keep it off, or hang on to it like a security blanket. These substances, in fact, have been around since the beginning of time and I’m surprised more people don’t value their importance like they should. What are these magical agents of fat burning wizardry? Water and Fiber. Let me explain why…

Everyone has heard that water is important for health, but even still, most people don’t drink enough water. Water is also vital to your fat burning efforts and maintaining a lean body. After all, our bodies are about 65-70% water. Water also keeps you from snacking on unhealthy sugary foods and sugar laden soft drinks, as many times when we feel we are hungry, we are actually just dehydrated. We need water in our bodies more than we need food. The body can survive for much longer without food that without water. Water is like the oil in the engines of our cars. It is involved in almost every process the body goes through, from digestion to nutrient absorption. It also keeps your energy level up as it prevents dehydration.

Now, this is very important…dehydration will totally kill your chances of burning fat, because the body interprets this as a state of shock. It shifts its focus on getting water and stops doing other things, like burning body fat for energy. And here’s even more helpful info about the power of water. Try this little trick to burn even more calories…try and drink most if not all of your water in ice cold form. First of all, it typically tastes better ice cold, and every time you drink an ounce of ice cold water, your body must burn about a calorie in the process of warming the water to your current body temperature. Now, you can use this to your advantage to burn even more calories each day. Keep your water intake to 100 ounces per day, and you’ll burn an extra 100 calories and burn more fat! How cool is that!

Also, add some lemon to your water…this will have positive effects in helping cleanse your liver. And this brings up another key to fat loss…the body needs to be working efficiently if you want to burn fat fast…if your organs, especially the kidneys and liver, are working together in high efficiency, you will find it easier to burn fat! So keeping yourself hydrated will keep your kidneys operating at a good clip, and your liver will be allowed to do its job of metabolizing stored fat for energy.

The other magical substance is Fiber. Fiber slows digestion and makes you feel fuller. This is so important in burning fat and reducing cravings, especially for foods loaded with sugar, and how many calories you end up eating throughout the day, which leads to fat loss. Great sources of fiber include various whole grain products, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and beans. These, by the way, are foods that are also rich in other nutrients your body craves naturally…surprise surprise! Processed foods, however, are poor sources of fiber. White flour products including regular pasta is in this category. Also, watch out for high fiber cereals as many of these are also high in sugar. On top of the fat burning benefits, fiber has been linked to the prevention of various conditions including heart disease, diabetes and cancer. That’s a one-two health punch to be reckoned with!

So I urge you to put water and fiber at the top of your list of things to put in your body. If you combine that focus with a diet of nutrient rich foods and a properly conducted resistance exercise program, you’ll be on your way to burning more fat faster, and maximizing your genetic potential for a lean, strong, and healthy body. As with a good majority of the things we do in life, we rely heavily on our vision or eyesight as the determining factor in whether or not we believe something. And this is unfortunately the case in trying to burn fat as well. What’s the old cliché? A picture is worth a thousand words, right? Well, when we lock our eyes onto that photo of that buff guy or buxom bombshell on the cover of the latest fitness or weight loss product, something happens. We get excited. We may even get very excited!

Unfortunately, this is something that many in the fitness industry are preying on. They know this and use it to their huge advantage. The process is simple: put a great looking and in-shape guy or girl on a product and it will sell. They don’t even have to tell you you’ll look like that person - they already know your subconscious will assume it will happen. When you’re desperate to burn fat, this is an easy game for the fitness industry to play.

And of course a few weeks later if it doesn’t, you may start to lose hope and realize that it’s going to be tough to keep up with the unrealistic and overly strict guidelines. You’ve got a life, right? Sure, you want to burn fat, but you’ve got a job, maybe a family, and other interests in life. Don’t get me wrong, I love a great fat burning workout, but I know you don’t want to spend every waking hour for the rest of your life working out!

All of this happened to me several times over as a young man. I wasn’t happy with my weight, wanted to burn fat, and was in search of the most efficient way to get lean, strong, and healthy, but while not spending too much time in the gym, or having to follow crazy diet plans for long periods of time. After more than a decade of experimenting on myself, friends, relatives, and perfect strangers, I assembled some of the secrets that I found to work best at burning fat and in the shortest amount of time, on myself and the others that I worked with. Now, what led me to do this was an incredible amount of frustration that I know thousands of others are going through right now. Why? To answer that, I want you to understand the psychological aspects of what we are up against in the world of health and fitness.

What do you call doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? OK, I’ll answer this one…Insanity! In some ways, the fitness industry is making you insane in your quest to burn fat and get a lean, strong, and healthy body. Their promises are too good to be true and often they can’t typically deliver on them. They are over-promising and under-delivering in many cases.

It’s a big psychological game that the fitness industry is playing with us, and it dates back to our childhood. When we were kids, we were all taught in school that we could do anything we wanted to do when we grew up. Your parents might have even told you that you can achieve anything you want if you believe in it strongly enough. I know mine did. While this can provide great inspiration in life’s pursuits, it can also be used against you by others, and without you knowing. You are largely a product of your genetic makeup. Just as Mini-Me from the Austin Powers movies could never play in the NBA, a guy like Woody Allen could never win a heavyweight bodybuilding competition.

The reality is that these two guys can burn fat and get in the best shape of their life, but our genes are responsible for much of what we end up looking like when in that best shape. But this isn’t what the fitness industry will typically tell you - they want you thinking that anyone can look like a genetic freak of nature…if you just follow their programs, that is. Please know that I am not saying you are doomed by your genes…everyone can make amazing improvements in their physiques with proper exercise and nutrition habits. It’s when we start comparing ourselves to the guys or gals in the magazines that we get into trouble, and get lost in that vicious cycle of hype and sensationalism all too prevalent in fitness and fat burning today.

As I mentioned before, you’ve got a life. You’re a busy person. We all are. We live in a fast-paced society, the information age, where we have so many tasks to complete and so little time to complete them. I don’t know about you, but I find myself trying to cram everything I do into those few hours between waking up and going to sleep. It’s not easy. Then comes along the fitness gurus telling you that to burn fat and get in great shape you’ve got to workout everyday or close to it. You’ve got to do aerobics or cardiovascular exercise to burn fat, several times a week. You’ve got to weight train several other days each week, so that you are literally working out 5-6 days each week, every week. If you want it, you’ve got to do it, they say.

I’m here to tell you that nothing could be further from the truth! Many of these programs will also tell you that you’ve got to follow some crazy diet to burn fat. This might include cutting all or most of your carbs, ingesting loads of supplements or other magic weight loss potions. On top of that, when their programs don’t deliver, they’ll tell you that everyone is different and that you’ve got to find what works right for you. Wait a minute…weren’t they just telling you that their program promises the body on the cover?

What they are doing is keeping you in that fitness insanity that I mentioned earlier. They keep you doing the same thing (trying then next hot product or workout and diet regimen) and promising the same great fat burning results. If it doesn’t work, they recommend the next great thing. And too many people go on to that next miracle product or promise and the fitness industry uses this to their advantage!

Unfortunately the fitness industry, in many ways, has become a cycle of hype and sensationalism. Sure, there are some good-hearted trainers and professionals out there, but even some of them are being controlled by the fitness center owners, magazine publishers, and supplement companies. That’s where the money is! Even if they are trying to help you, they can become unwitting victims to the machine.

They advertise their products, programs, and diets by using the cream of the crop in the genetic gene pool. Hey, if it worked for that guy or gal with the amazing physique, it will work for me. I fell for it, too, many times, until I did some serious research and experimentation as I mentioned before. Then one day I finally woke up and discovered for myself the secrets that few people are aware of. Secrets that will never dominate the fitness industry’s general recommendations because they are unpopular with the people that control the industry. Why?

Because these principles won’t sell loads of crazy exercise gimmicks, gadgets, or magic potions. My Fat Burning Furnace students are schooled in the proper application of brief, progressive, and intense resistance training, eating a diet full of nutrient rich foods, drinking tons of water, and getting plenty of quality sleep and rest.

But our subconscious mind is powerful, and you have to watch out…even today, I can get sucked in to a compelling late night TV ad, even though I know better. So you’ve got to stay on guard. If people would pay more attention to proven principles like those I teach my students, and spend less time with the latest “butt buster” or “fat stripper” on the market, we’d all be healthier, leaner, stronger, and happier for it. And we’d also be burning a heck of a lot more fat in the process.

Are You Caught Up In A Cycle Of Fat Loss & Fitness Confusion?

As a member of a popular fitness center for a few years, I noticed countless others frustrated with their fat burning exercise routines and eating practices, working so hard and long but with virtually no improvement to show for it. Several of my own friends and relatives would mention this new program or product they had just shelled out cash for that was the answer to their fat loss or fitness goals. They were so excited about it and couldn’t wait to get started.

Then, a few weeks later, the same happy-go-lucky people that were once jumping with joy about their new plan to burn fat and get a new body became downright discouraged. It was hard to watch. I’d ask them how their fat burning plan was working and they’d tell me that it seemed pretty good at first, but they didn’t get the results they were expecting or they felt were promised. They quickly became tired of following the daily workouts and found following the strict eating guidelines almost maddening at times. So they hopped onto the next plan.

Even worse, they became so frustrated with following these so-called exercise gurus’ programs, that they fell even deeper into unhealthy eating habits once they stopped the program. Binging became their only form of satisfaction. Forget about maximum fat burning, and talk about moving in the wrong direction. What’s worse is that all of these people were following the typically recommended exercise and fad diets that were all the rage. They were doing what everyone else was doing to burn fat fast.

After speaking with many of these friends and inquiring about their exercise routines, I noticed one common theme that kept popping up in our discussions…they were focused on the short term…their approach was wrong. They weren’t thinking of lifelong health and fitness, but instead they were thinking about burning fat and getting in shape for “swimsuit season”. More specifically, they were also performing their exercise in a less than optimal manner. And then I noticed this with many others at the fitness center I worked out in. They just seemed to lack the fire or intensity in their fat burning workouts which I knew could turn their programs from nothing to something literally overnight.

But you know, you can hardly blame them, and you certainly shouldn’t blame yourself if you’ve fallen into the cycle of fad exercise and diet programs. We all want to achieve what we know in our hearts we’re capable of so badly, and that’s why we’re such easy prey to this “get fit quick” mentality.

Most people are approaching health and fitness in the exact opposite way that they should be, and they’re not going to burn fat because of it. If you continually think of using exercise and nutrition as ways to lose a couple of pounds, or get in shape for summer, you’re going to be disappointed with your results. If you think of exercise, nutrition, and rest as separate things, you’re going to be disappointed with your fat burning and fitness results. If you think you need to spend hours a week in the gym or adhere to some strange unnatural eating strategy, you’re going to be disappointed with your results.

What all of these approaches will do, is put you into the fat burning and fitness cycle of confusion that so many are stuck in these days. If instead, you choose to forget what you thought you knew, and start off with the right approach, the approach that focuses on making changes in your lifestyle long term, you’ll instantly improve your results by 1000%. When your approach includes combining proper exercise that takes very little of your time, nutrition the way nature intended you to eat that is simple to understand and follow, and the rest and recovery that is vital to lifelong vitality and energy, you’ll experience an awakening of both body and mind. Plus you’ll burn more fat, too.

If you choose the path most often taken by those looking to improve upon them selves, you’ll most likely end up like most of them. Confused, frustrated, unhappy, burnt out, injured, sick, or worse. Did I mention very unhappy with their fat burning progress as well? Instead, you can choose to embrace a lifestyle that includes brief, progressive, and intense resistance training, eating a diet full of nutrient rich foods, drinking tons of water, and getting plenty of quality sleep and rest. Not “slows” or “repairs”…

Reverses.

I know…it shocked me too.

I have been a champion of the anti.aging
lifestyle I teach in Fit Over 40. It certainly
“looks” like the 52 people in my book are
aging backwards.

I never thought their muscles were literally
turning back the genetic clock. But this new
research proves this is exactly what is going
on when you exercise with resistance.

Resistance exercise can be weight training or
just using your bodyweight. This is exercise
that is heavy enough to cause some strain but
not so heavy that it is painful or dangerous.

Some of the biology aspects of the study are
frankly over my head. But I will try to give you
the highlights.

The Unreal Findings

The mitochondria is the energy factory of the
human cell. As we age our muscles begin to
show what researchers call “mitochondrial
dysfunction”. This is what causes all the bad
stuff associated with “sarcopenia.”

Sarcopenia is just the wasting away of muscle
due to age and under-use. As we age most of
us will experience a gradual loss of muscle.

The problem? Muscle is active tissue. It is
responsible for most of the calories we use
during the day.

The less muscle you have, the more body fat
you will gain if you eat the same amount of
food.

Muscle loss is also related to the onset of many
bone diseases. The muscle that holds our spine
in alignment can deteriorate as we age and
cause major back problems. The same is true
for the muscle and tendons around the knee
and hip joints.

Can you see why muscle loss is a major deal?
Is it any wonder researchers wanted to see if
there was something we could do about it?

Resistance training obviously builds muscle.
And it does so at any age. Just look at anyone
in my book and you will be convinced of that.

But that is not the real find in this study. We have
numerous studies that show you can gain lean
muscle at any age.

This study revealed something extraordinary:
after just six months of resistance training
test subjects showed a “reversal of most of
the genes affected by age” in muscle tissue.

With age and no resistance training, researchers
found 596 genes expressing themselves with
“aging”, or decreased mitochondrial function.

But when subjects engaged in resistance training,
in this case simple weight training, look what
happened –

Their strength increased by over 20%;
And their genes literally “reverted back” to the
same markers as “younger” genes after only
six months of exercise

This is staggering.

It is one thing to maintain muscle as we age. To
gain muscle is even better.

But to know that we are literally reverting our
genes to a “younger version” within the muscle?
And after only six months?

That is downright amazing.

That’s not all…

When the older folks in the study began, they were
almost 60% weaker than the younger members of
the study.

In just six months, they were only 38% weaker.

I can tell you from personal experience that in a
few more months they would be even stronger.
In some cases their strength would surpass the
younger test subjects.

I am much stronger now than when I was 23, or
33. I am now 43.

I plan to be stronger at 53.

Strength is not a luxury as we age. It is absolutely
necessary for longevity and health. And this all
takes place at the genetic level.

Just imagine.

Lessons From My 4 Year Old Daughter… Unstoppable Fat Loss ‘YES’ Attitude

I can’t tell you how excited I am to share a recent
story about how my 4 year old daughter Noelle is
living the Unstoppable Lifestyle.

Recently I shared a story about my 5 year old son
living the unstoppable lifestyle when he made the
decision to climb a mountain.

If you haven’t read that story yet, you can check
it out in the post below.

A couple months ago my daughter was sitting at
the table making a craft and she was getting very
frustrated because it wasn’t working out. She
was on the verge of giving up.

My wife Angie approached her and asked her what
the problem was. Angie then proceeded to tell
Noelle to talk to herself and say “I think I
can, I think I can…”

…You know the story about the little engine that
could. (I’m not sure why we ever lose those beliefs)

Anyhow, Noelle started to repeat it to herself and
sure enough she did it.

Well that lesson really sunk in for her. Shortly
after that she fell off a rather high slide at
the park and she was really upset.

…But we could see the unstoppable attitude creeping
up. She picked herself up and got right back up on
the slide and made it safely all the way down.

At the bottom we heard her say to herself, “See I
told you I could do it!”

Then just over the weekend we were swimming at my
parents house and Noelle was a bit nervous. She
was wearing water wings plus she had a little
inner tube around her.

She refused to go in without the inner tube. She
was actually a little terrified when we tried to
get it away from her.

A couple hours went by and most of us were out
of the pool grabbing a bite to eat, but Noelle
stayed in the pool paddling around.

Then without hesitation she climbed onto the steps
and ditched the inner tube and jumped in the water.

There was a brief moment of fear and then quickly
a joyous shout out, “Mommy look at me, I’m swimming!”

We were all so excited. Angie asked her, “Did you
tell yourself ‘I think I can’?”

Noelle said, “No, I just kept saying ‘YES’, YES’!”

These are huge lessons of living the unstoppable
lifestyle. Having a powerful mindset is so much
more than positive thinking.

A large part of it has to do with attitude. Noelle
clearly has an unstoppable attitude and Angie and
I are continuing to nurture that attitude in her.

There’s a great book out there that was given as
a gift to me called, “The Little Gold Book Of
YES! Attitude” by Jeffrey Gitomer.

I highly recommend it. You can find it at your
local book store or online.

What I see happen all too often is that we encourage
our kids and tell them that they can do or be
whatever they want.

Yet as they get older we tend to become over protective
because we don’t want them to get hurt. That’s when
they develop a fear to try new things or take
calculated risks.

Isn’t it time that you get that unstoppable attitude
back?

Are you going to start repeating to yourself, YES!”,
whenever you are faced with an obstacle?

Go to your local library and check out “The Little
Engine That Could”. It applies more to your life
now than it ever did for you as a child.
